Not certain what happened - Posted at 1:46 PM on 7/20/2007 by GenesysWave
I seem to be missing a couple of blog posts that I put up over the past week.
I was merrily entering away and did not come back to check.
I will see if I can find cached copies somewhere.

Safari for Windows part 2 - Posted at 8:33 AM on 6/18/2007 by GenesysWave

Following up to my earlier post about Safari for Windows.  Keep in mind this is just my personal experience.  Your mileage and appreciation may vary.

I am still fairly underwhelmed.  I am fairly heavy user of both Firefox and IE and the features and security appear to be much more flexible in those browsers.

Example - JavaScript - I prefer to not run it unless I know the site that I am visiting -either through zones in IE or with a script plug in in Firefox.  in Safari it seems that I have the option to turn it off or turn it on.  I am going to keep looking but that seems to be more of configuration method for Acrobat than for a web browser.

Another interesting feature is that after I minimize the application to my taskbar and then restore it to full screen, Safari pops back up and then resizes itself to a window.  Again something to keep watching.

Last item I have noticed (and this could be an issue with Acrobat) when I try to view multiple pdf files in Safari I can only see the first one open.  The other files appear as blank screens.

What this leads me to is one thing that I really have liked about Safari.  The bug reporting feature was well designed.  It reports what site I was visiting when I encountered the issue, allows me to comment on the issue and categorize it into what I think best fits the situation.  It can also attach a screen shot of the site and the source code from the site.  It would be great to see this kind of feed back tool in more applications even after they are no longer in beta.

Security Everywhere - Posted at 8:41 AM on 5/22/2007 by GenesysWave
Andy IT Guy pointed out an article at BankInfoSecurity about how easily we forget our surroundings and reveal information to complete strangers.  We have gotten used to giving out information over the phone when we are at home.  Now that we have a phone with us at every moment of the day we risk revealing too much information.  A second point that is raised is how easily information is spread across the Internet.  Look to the engadget-iphone event as a new example of information that was not (likely) meant to be shared ( I suspect that it was meant as an internal joke) that took on a life of its own and caused problems for the Applie stock price (though that has mostly corrected itself).

Geez, should update more often. - Posted at 10:16 AM on 5/21/2007 by GenesysWave
Sorry for not updating.  Started a project in the yard at the beginning of April and time got away from me.  I have a few posts coming up that will cover the Windows Firewall, my experience with a LaFonera wireless device, and some scripting that I have been working on.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately - Posted at 12:05 PM on 4/4/2007 by GenesysWave
I have been working on a new deployment image for my employer and on the yard at home so I have not had a lot of time to comment or post.  I am going to try to set some time today to post on a few things that have been on my mind.

No Patches this month? - Posted at 9:35 AM on 3/15/2007 by GenesysWave
I am  a bit confused at the moment.  Microsoft said that they were not going to release any critical patches this month on Patch Tuesday.  However when I checked Windows Update on a server I was rebuilding yesterday morning I discovered that they had released Service Pack 2 for Windows 2003.  That seems like a bit of a critical update to me.  I am probably not the only one confused by this at the moment.  I will try to get some additional insight and post more later.

Update 4:50 PM 3/16/07
Did not really see much as to why this was released so quietly.  After reading the notes at Microsoft.com, SP2 add some features but was really more of a roll up of many previous updates.  I have it installed on one server at the moment and will test on  few more over the next week before I consider rolling out to the machines I support.
Follow up to McDonald's WiFi - Posted at 9:33 AM on 3/15/2007 by GenesysWave
Still looking into this.  Appears to be a similar solution that a lot of large hotel changes are using for a managed WiFi solution.  I am going to review their privacy policy and pricing.

Blog update - Posted at 7:46 AM on 3/10/2007 by GenesysWave in Blog Related
I have found out that I actually have few readers.  Wow.  Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings.
The one piece of feedback I have gotten so far is that I do not have an RSS feed.  Well I have now add one to my blog.  You can add it to your reader here
Thanks for reading.

Waiting for me today - Posted at 4:02 PM on 3/8/2007 by GenesysWave
My Gmail account made me happy today.  I am also going to look at OpenNAS (lower hard drive requirements)
Invitation to participate in Windows Home Server Beta
I am also going to look at OpenNAS because of the lower hard drive requirements.
I will post about the install proces later.

Family Security Series - Posted at 4:14 PM on 3/2/2007 by GenesysWave
Andy, ITGuy beat me to the punch on this
Check out the Promo on YouTube

I am really excited for this series for two reasons
1.  It will be helpful to show to friends and family
2.  It will be useful for the office as well as friends and family

Back again - Posted at 8:57 AM on 2/23/2007 by GenesysWave
In a previous post I commented on the irony that the Security Catalyst community got taken down because of hackers, well the good news is the site is back up and it is possible to post again

Outlook 2007 RSS frustration - Posted at 8:54 AM on 2/23/2007 by GenesysWave
Small venting.    I keep losing rss feeds that I really enjoy like the Security Catalyst  and have yet to figure out the reason.  I readd and the feed will stay until I have to shutdown my system and then it will disappear after I go back in.  If I find a solution I will post it here

Removing SQL 2005 Reporting Services - Posted at 9:28 AM on 2/21/2007 by GenesysWave
I am in charge of updates and maintenance on 200+ servers across the country.  Ran into a problem updating SQL Server 2005 to Service Pack 1.  All of our servers were imaged and the SQL Reporting Services naming is from the originally imaged server.  This prevented Service Pack 1 from installing properly.
We do not really need to have Reporting Services at each client site so we decided to remove it.
Found information at this link on how to force the removal if the uninstall did not work.  This seemed to be a little overboard for me, so I took the tool mentioned in the first answer from Wavesmash MSIINV and found the Product Code for Reporting Services.  I then used the MSI installer command line tool (MSIEXEC.exe) to uinstall using a script
here is the single line of code to remove Reporting Services.   c:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe /uninstall {Product Code for Reporting Services}/quiet
Testing has been successful on the uninstall and SP1 install.

Time Well Spent - Posted at 1:29 PM on 1/24/2007 by GenesysWave
I have made it my habit over the past few months to use my drive time to and from work (about 45 minutes each way) to listen to podcasts instead of the radio.  This has been a great use of my time and I recommend it to anyone who has an extended commute.
Currently listening to
PaulDotCom Security Weekly
Network Security Podcast
Binary Revolution Radio
CERIAS Security Seminar Podcast

Sad Irony - Posted at 12:41 PM on 1/24/2007 by GenesysWave
This pisses me off a bit. It appears the Security Catalyst community was a quick target for some attackers.
I look forward to the return of the Forums.
